Why do you think farm work pays less than janitor duties? Especially when the farm work is obviously harder.
The farm work pays less because the people who takes those jobs are only 'undocumented' people, they have no other choice, it's the only path for them. In the other hand, the janitor job pays more because only Americans are valid for the job. To support this, in the book, Roberto had to reassure the principal that he's an American citizen to get the job.
How did Panchito stepped out in the chapter in Breaking Through?
Panchito tended to be very quiet. But he decided to step out of his bubble and decided to have fun too! To support this, Panchito wanted to sing Elvis songs in front of his whole class. And everyone was impressed!
How have I "Stepped Out?"
Do you think religion/spirituality helps or hurts people in poverty?
It helps people in poverty because it gives them hope. When nothing else can be done, hope can lessen their pain and fear. Like when Torito was sick, the family couldn't do anything because they were poor, so they prayed everyday and night. And it gives them hope.
Put yourself in the shoes of a farmworker youth. Imagine working 14 hours in harsh conditions. What would be the hardest thing about this life for you?
The hardest part would be seeing others having the same fate as me, and still can't do nothing about it. All we can do is just keep working and working to just make ends meet. We can't protest or strike or anything cause our bosses would replace us in a blink.
One of the farmworker kids says, "After all the work is over, nobody remembers the people. Or the children who worked. The farmworker is forgotten" Do you agree with this statement? Do these videos change the way you think about fruits and vegetables? Explain.
I believe what the kid said is true. When we put fruits and veggies in our table, do we think of the farmworkers? No. I think these videos changed the way I think about fruits and veggies, cause I never knew people that picked our fruits and veggies are kids. I never knew child labor existed here, but wow... it's happening actually right here. Shocking.
Panchito's family sticks together, they help each other through poverty, and there is a high level of respect.
Do you think Pancho made the right choice? Defend your answer.
Yeah, he made the right choice, choosing education and going to college. By being a teacher, Panchito can get his family out of poverty, and to fulfill his dreams. He can teach others about his life of being in poverty. And this is exactly what he's doing right now, Panchito wrote the book called Breaking Through which talks about his experience with poverty.
